Artefact VR

About

ArtefactVR is a personal development project created in-between funded projects, to showcase some of the 3D model scans the 3DVisLab has accrued from various other projects.

The aim of this application was to develop a virtual reality showcase room, built using the Unreal Engine, in which the user's can get a one to one scale view of 3D scans of real world  museum artefacts which they can manipulate in the virtual environment whilst relevant information such as the item's description and audio or video is played related to the item being currently viewed.

The environment was designed to change depending on which set of artefacts are being viewed, for example if the shipwreck artefacts are viewed the environment resembles that of being underwater; or there is a basic unchanging environment to focus solely on the artefacts themselves.

The artefacts were provided by the Stromness Museum in Orkney, Scotland and were scanned and digitised by Dr Alice Watterson of the 3DVisLab, University of Dundee.
